Ranong Airport Thailand (UNN)

Ranong International Airport code is UNN. The small terminal and basic air services are 23 kilometers away from the center of Ranong Town.

The airport operates in Ranong Province which is about 300 km north of Phuket Island.

Travel Facilities at Ranong Airport

Ranong airport had been out of commission for quite a while. But, some of the low cost carriers now operate a much needed flight service in and out of the area.

Regular flights operate from Ranong to Bangkok Don Mueang Airport (DMK). That means you should also find local taxi drivers available from the terminal.

The airport at Ranong has a small car rental service and there are a few shops where you can buy food snacks and coffee.

Ranong Airport was once a military airport. So even though it spreads across a large area, there is only one terminal. There are at least 14 domestic flights operating each week at Ranong Airport.

There are several travel agency booths in the area at the point where you exit the baggage reclaim area.

Thai Airways and Emirates Airlines also operate at this air terminal. They both provide limited services and flights arriving and departing from Ranong Airport.

Most of the major hotels near Ranong Airport operate a taxi shuttle service. There are only a few hotels within 10 km.

But there is a bigger choice of hotel accommodation around 20 km distance from the airfield. You should find suitable hotel rooms around $50 per night.

Ranong Airport Surrounding Area

Even if you have traveled Thailand before, you may not be familiar with Ranong Province.

You would need to travel almost 600 km south of Bangkok Metropolis to get to Ranong. In fact, the remote province shares a border with Myanmar.

The Port Authority of Thailand governs the traffic and cargo at the Port of Ranong. It is one of the busiest Indian Ocean ports out of all the Andaman Coast Provinces in Thailand.

The area surrounding Ranong Airport is quite mountainous. It has dense forests covering many of the natural charms in this region. The area has natural mangrove swamps and breath-taking waterfalls.

Ranong Monsoons and Rural Countryside

Ranong has the longest monsoons in the whole of Thailand. The Thai rainy season can last up to eight months in these parts. That makes for a green fertile countryside and a rural place to live.

The South West Province is famous for hot springs. This is partly because they keep a year-round temperature around 65 Celsius. You can find them less than 2 km east of the town center. The hot springs comprise three main pools. Locals refer to them as the Father Pool, the Mother Pool and the Child Pool.

Tourists in Ranong may also choose to visit the Raksawarin Park arboretum. Staying near the botanical gardens is on most travelers' bucket list.

Another huge draw on tourism is Ranong's proximity to many of the best scuba diving sites in the world. The coastal waters are the gateway for most Thailand Liveaboard boats. They head out to the Mergui Archipelago and Burma Banks in search of clear water and diverse marine life.

There is still plenty of activity in Ranong even for non-divers. You could take a short speed boat trip to one of the unsullied islands. The closest islands to the coast of Ranong include Koh Phayan and Koh Chang Noi.
