Snappers Facts and Species Information

Taxonomy [Perciformes] [Phylum: Chordata] [Class: Actinopterygii] [Family: Lutjanidae ]

Snapper fish are predominantly found throughout the tropics and usually in large active groups.

There are more than 100 different species of snapper fishes and they tend to be larger in size than other typical schooling fishes.

In fact many adult snappers with elongated bodies and large mouths can reach almost one meter in length.

They are carnivores crunching crustaceans and other smaller fishes with their razor-sharp canines.

Although many reef snappers are regarded by humans as tasty food sources, certain species can produce a food-borne illness.

For example the Atlantic dog snapper is known to be contaminated with a toxin.
