Carbon Monoxide Poisoning is not a regular ailment suffered by divers but is usually caused by scuba diving with contaminated air inside the tank. Carbon Monoxide Toxicity in diving can happen when there is incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons from the compressor and also from smoking cigarettes. It can cause permanent brain damage and may be fatal if not quickly detected and corrected.

• Faulty compressor
• Exhaust fumes entering compressor air inlet

Signs & Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Toxicity:
• Headache
• Irritability, confusion, memory loss, apathy, drowsiness
• Dizziness
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Shortness of breath

First Aid Treatment for Carbon Monoxide Toxicity:
• Remove from the source
• Monitor the signs of life and begin CPR if necessary
• Provide 100% oxygen
• Get medical aid
• Call the DAN emergency hotline for advice (hyperbaric oxygen treatment is often required)
