Scuba Diving Blue Ringed Octopus Bite Information and Advice
The Blue Ringed Octopus is mainly found in the Indo Pacific Ocean countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, The Philippines, Indonesia, Fiji and Japan.
Signs & Symptoms of Blue Ringed Octopus Bite:
• Progressive breathing failure can occur within 10 to 15 minutes
• Small, painless bite which may become red and swollen and look like a blood blister
• Numbness (initially around the mouth & neck)
• Nausea & Vomiting
• Visual disturbances
• Difficulty swallowing
• Droopy eyelids
• Difficulty breathing
First Aid Treatment for Blue Ringed Octopus Bite:
• Apply resuscitation as required
• Pressure immobilisation
• Keep the diver still, quiet and reassured; Do not let them walk
• Seek urgent medical aid
• Monitor consciousness, airway and breathing
Special Considerations for Blue Ringed Octopus Bite:
If CPR is required, it must be maintained until the diver begins to breathe (which could take some hours).
The Pressure Bandage must not occlude the circulation; The finger/toes beyond the bandage should remain pink with normal sensation; The bandage should be left in place until proper medical support is available.
