Scuba Diving Alternobaric Vertigo Information and Advice
Disturbance to the inner ear balance mechanism is the main cause of vertigo and often results in dizziness, light headedness and fainting. The loss of spatial balance sense while diving requires an immediate ascent and can be extremely dangerous, often causing nausea and vomiting. Medical attention should be sought by a diver experiencing loss of balance and vertigo.
Cause of Alternobaric Vertigo:
Uneven pressure stimulation of the balance mechanisms in the ears due to;
• Blockage of the Eustachian tube(s)
• Unequal middle ear pressures
Signs & Symptoms of Alternobaric Vertigo:
• Vertigo
• Nausea
• Occasional pain
Relief may accompany middle ear equalization
First Aid Treatment for Alternobaric Vertigo:
• Stop the Decent/Ascent
• Equalise adequately
• Ascend slowly
